Due to political and cultural conflict surrounding indigenous Cambodians in Vietnam, her family sought a life in America. Her earliest years were spent in a refugee camp before immigrating to America in 1999. Initially aspiring to a career in law, Makara decided instead to pursue her love for painting as a full time artist.
