Three One-Hour Softball Hitting Lessons & Metrics

You will receive three one-hour fastpitch softball hitting instruction from Holly Knight. Each lesson will determine the current weaknesses of the hitter's swing and work on ways of correcting the flaws through instruction that includes drills with "home work" assignments of which to work on between lessons.

Strengths of the hitter will also be determined with the approach that we maintain our strengths while improving or eliminating our weaknesses.

Testing for metrics such as bat speed and exit velocity will be conducted in one of the three lessons.

The Science of First Impressions: What’s It to You?

When meeting someone new, it only takes your brain a few seconds to construct a first impression. Read on to learn what happens during that brief but crucial moment.

First impressions are immediate and instinctual—a gut reaction that tells us whom to trust and whom to send down the trapdoor under their feet. But as the brain shows, when we meet someone for the first time, we assign value to that person based on our own preferences and experiences, making for a unique, intimate connection that might explain the eternal mystery of “love at first sight.”

As it happens in the brain, formulating a first impression is a joint effort carried out by the amygdala and posterior cingulate cortex. The amygdala receives and processes information from all the senses, and the posterior cingulate cortex houses autobiographical memory, regulating how we act based on what think of ourselves and how we fit into the world. Together, the regions read sensory information and filter it through our own subjective lens.

Does Confidence Matter?

In social terms, the science of first impressions is less clear. Popular opinion holds that confidence is the most important way to give off a good impression. But as Amy Cuddy, a social psychologist at Harvard Business School, told Wired, the two things we evaluate first are trustworthiness and competence. In other words, coming across as honest and capable is far more important than simply exuding confidence—which is why, for instance, letting others speak first tends to work better than steamrollering a conversation.

Either way, the importance of a first impression can’t be understated. As relationships develop, we seek out information—what a person says, does, and wears—to revise our initial opinion, but in fact, we often gloss over evidence that could overturn that all-important first impression. This phenomenon, called confirmation bias, is what inspires the old saying: you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Sewing Machines: A Stitch in No Time

Though it takes years of practice to create well-fitting clothes, almost anyone can use a sewing machine. Read on to learn how this automated needle works its magic.

The sewing machine is a modern marvel, in minutes creating perfect lines of stitches that would have once taken hours of manual labor. Unlike a tailor working by hand, sewing machines don’t need to pass a needle all the way through the fabric to make a stitch. Instead, the eye of the needle—located near the point—dips only partway in before retracting up for another stitch. It’s all thanks to the simple mechanism found just below the surface of most commercial sewing machines.

In the Loop

Essentially a small spool wound with thread, the bobbin is encased inside a rotating piece of metal called the shuttle hook. At the instant a threaded needle plunges through the fabric, the shuttle hook catches the thread and passes it around the bobbin. The thread is then formed into a loop that meets a single thread extending from the bobbin. When the needle retracts, it pulls the threaded loop into a tight, secure knot, finishing off one sequence of the pattern known as the loop stitch. Above the shuttle hook and bobbin, a flat, forked piece called the presser foot holds the fabric in place and inches it forward with each stitch. Thanks to this reliable system, even neophyte stitchers are able to easily mend a torn pair of pants or perform invasive surgery on a dying Muppet.
