Writers and Readers Open Mic

On Monday, Oct. 27, Abbot Public Library continues its new Open Mic series, inviting the community to share their writings. Whether you're a seasoned writer or just starting out, this is a chance to connect with your community. You can prepare a short story or a nonfiction prose piece. At each gathering, we’ll welcome a featured reader, after which the mic will be open to the first 10 people who sign up. Readers are asked to keep readings to five minutes or less. J.D. Scrimgeour will be the featured speaker for October. The first Salem Poet Laureate, Scrimgeour is the author of six books of poetry and nonfiction. He is a professor of English at Salem State University and his writing often focuses on class and education. His nonfiction book, “Themes for English B,” won the AWP Award for nonfiction. For the past thirty years, he has lived in Salem, a city where some of his ancestors were put to death for being witches, and others sat on the jury that found them guilty. His most recent book is “Small, Rectangular, Reflected World,” a collection of poems. This fall, he’s visiting us from Gloucester where he has been living in the T. S. Eliot House, a writers’ retreat. The Open Mic will be hosted by Claire Keyes, a celebrated poet and Professor Emerita at Salem State University. Light refreshments will be served following the readings. Registration is required and limited to 15. Please register at tinyurl.com/open-mic-Oct-2025 This program is sponsored by the Friends of Abbot Public Library.
