Working the First Person Illusion in Middle Grade Fiction and Beyond with Kevin Carey

Class convenes on Saturday, July 6 at 3:30 pm for our hands-on workshop with gifted writer Kevin Carey. The topic? Using the first person narrative in middle grade fiction as well as other genres. Here’s your chance to “try on” this author’s tool, see how it fits. Working side-by-side with Carey, you will examine works that effectively use first person. As a group, you will explore the things to be aware of when making the choice to use this writing mode, and you’ll get an understanding of when and where to consider it as an option. And, of course, there will be time in this workshop for a generative writing assignment. Don’t be late! Meet Kevin Carey, a talented, award-winning writer across multiple genres. His books include “The One Fifteen to Penn Station” (2012); “The Beach People” (2014); “Jesus Was a Homeboy” (2016), which was an Honor book for the Paterson Literary Prize; “Set in Stone” (2020); and a crime novel, “Murder in the Marsh” (2020). Carey’s poems have appeared on The Writers Almanac on NPR and on The Academy of American Poets Poem-a-Day. Carey is also a playwright and a filmmaker and has co-directed and co-produced two documentaries about poets: “All That Lies Between Us” and “Unburying Malcolm Miller.” His more recent works include a new novel, “Junior Miles and the Junkman” (2023) and a co-written poetry collection, “Olympus Heights.” He is also the co-founder of Molecule: a tiny lit mag. Carey currently lives north of Boston with his wife, two cats and dog. When he’s not teaching, he’s often writing in local coffee shops, visiting his adult children, or hanging with his writing pals.
