Wolf Guy: Enraged Lycantrope
Prepare for a completely unclassifiable trip into phantasmagoric funk. Directed by genre genius Kazuhiko Yamaguchi (SISTER STREET FIGHTER), Sonny Chiba's karate-horror mashup WOLF GUY: ENGRAGED LYCANTHROPE is an intense addition to the pantheon of unheralded ‘70s classics -- and an eye-popping reminder that, at that time, the Japanese put more care towards cinematography and production design than any of their exploitation contemporaries (save for maybe the Italians.)
Chiba stars as the only survivor of an ancient werewolf clan who rely on supernatural powers to solve crimes. WOLF GUY is really three movies in one and they're all stellar: Chiba descends into the criminal underground to track a psychic tiger force mauling members of a glam rock gang; a mysterious syndicate traps Chiba and the tiger lady in a Cronenbergian testing facility to weaponize their animal rage; Chiba returns to his ravaged wolfman village and declares another lady his wife / mother (you know, like any relationship). A combo platter of grindhouse genres WOLF GUY: ENGRAGED LYCANTROPE is straight-faced filmmaking with a chaotic pop art energy that's overflowing with sleaze, energy, violence, trash and FUN. An extraordinary entertainment package.
