"Winter Wonderland" Exhibition Opening
"The idea for this exhibition came from the simple desire to share some of our amazing winter coats," said Executive Director Kim Kenney. "As we began to think about the broader themes we could explore at the same time, Winter Wonderland was born."
From hot chocolate sets and soup tureens to board games and toys, the artifacts on display in this exhibition illustrate how people connect with each other during the winter months. It is also cold and flu season, so the exhibition includes some of the remedies used in the past to ease our symptoms and take care of the sick.
A recreation of a 1930s living room scene features a magic lantern projecting a winter scene, a recliner with matching foot stool, and a board game in progress on the floor. A sleigh from the Museum's collection sits in the center of the gallery, featuring mannequins in period clothing.
The exhibition also explores the science of snow, how humans transformed the darkness with artificial light, and the ways in which people have kept themselves warm as they wait for the first signs of Spring.
