Whitmer Symposium and Community Service Award Sept 10


Jarrod Stansberry to Present at David Whitmer Symposium 10 Sept. at Farris Theatre.

The 2022 Annual David Whitmer Symposium will be held 10 Sept. 2022 at 2 pm at the Farris Theatre in Richmond. Following two years as a virtual event, the Symposium is back as a live event.This year's theme is Coal Miners and Roots. Jarrod Stansberry, President of the Ray County Genealogical Association, is the featured presenter. His presentation, 175 Years of Whitmers in the Ray County Community, highlights the contributions of the Whitmers (and other people of importance) in Ray County.There will also be a video presentation of Ray County Miners by Hal Middleton

Stansberry, a Higginsville native, has deep roots in Richmond. His father, Jim Stansberry, is a military veteran from Richmond and still owns a farm north of town. Stansberry's grandmother, Clara Chenault, helped turn the Ray County Poor Farm into a museum. She also wrote the History of Ray County in 1973. His uncle and great-grandfather, F.G. Weary III and F.G. Weary, Jr. ran the Farris Theatre from 1915-1984.

The Whitmer Symposium is dedicated to preserving and expanding knowledge and awareness of Ray County's rich history. The David Whitmer Community Service Award is presented annually to a member of the Ray County Community who has exemplified a life of community service and integrity. Past winners were Rob Kinnard, Jimmy Carter, F.G. Weary III, and Linda Emley. The 2022 David Whitmer Community Service Award recipient will be announced at the Symposium.
