White Cane Day

Introduced in the 1930s, white canes assist visually impaired pedestrians to travel independently. They also help motorists identify and yield to people who are visually impaired. Their use has been protected by law in the United States since that time. Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children (WPSBC) celebrates this national day or recognition with their Orientation & Mobility (O&M) team and students each year. Past celebrations have included talent shows and parades, centered around students showcasing their skills at navigating with their canes. This year, WPSBC team member Kate Landon, who is also a part-time instructor at the University of Pittsburgh, has partnered with Dr. Frances Mary D'Andrea, Program Coordinator in Visual Impairments and Blindness, and with the University of Pittsburgh School of Education in the planning of the 2025 celebration. The students and team members will be participating in a parade starting at 10 a.m., kicking off at WPSBC’s campus and following a route to the Cathedral of Learning lawn.
