What’s Going On: Ideas and Freedom in the Classroom

‘Iolani School’s next Keables Community Night is titled “What's Going On: Ideas and Freedom in the Classroom” and will feature Dr. Imani Perry and Dr. Robin D.G. Kelley. The event takes place Tuesday, March 12 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in Seto Hall and is free and open to the public. More about the speakers: Dr. Robin D.G. Kelley is a Professor of History at UCLA. Dr. Kelley's research interests also range widely. His Hammer and Hoe: Alabama Communists During the Great Depression is a pathbreaking and indispensable study of the Black working class. His prize-winning biography of pianist and composer Thelonius Monk is a compelling portrait of one of the most important and original American artists of the twentieth century. Dr. Imani Perry is a Professor of Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality and of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. Her scholarship has explored a wide range of topics – hip hop, parenthood, and inequality. She has written a biography of playwright and activist Lorraine Hansberry. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Perry's latest book, South to America: A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation, won the National Book Award. Dr. Perry has also been selected as a 2023 MacArthur Fellow.
