Arriving on the scene in the late ‘60s Blood Sweat & Tears sold millions of records won a couple Grammy Awards including Album of the Year (beating out The Beatles’ Abbey Road) and headlined at Woodstock. BS&T was a darling of the mainstream and rock press icon of the counterculture and inspiration for a generation of horn-based bands. The band’s top-ten hits Spinning Wheel You Made Me So Very Happy and When I Die continue to be radio playlist staples.
In June 1970 Blood, Sweat & Tears became the first American rock band to perform behind the Iron Curtain on a tour sponsored by the U.S. State Department. The tour was a curious decision which was at the very height of its popularity. Like much of the youth in America band members had been outspoken of the Vietnam War. The association with the State Department was viewed through the political lens of the time.
After returning stateside the band became a victim of societal upheaval and culture wars. Suddenly Blood Sweat & Tears was perceived as no longer hip and cool losing support from fans the media concert promoters and the recording industry.
Through documentary footage shot during the Iron Curtain tour (previously thought to be lost) and present-day interviews with band members and historians What the Hell Happened to Blood Sweat & Tears? tells the story of an extraordinary year in rock history.
