The Westside Chicano Moratorium continues this year on Saturday, September 6th. This event, both protest and celebration in anniversary of the 55th Chicano Moratorium, will take place on unceded Tongva land at Mar Vista Recreation Center. This year’s theme of “End the Occupation” will stand steadfast in the original Chicano Moratorium’s demands against war and racism by demanding an end to the occupation of Palestine by the IOF and the occupation of Los Angeles by ICE.
August 29, 1970, is known as one of the largest anti-war demonstrations in U.S. history when Chicanos gathered in East LA to protest both the disproportionate amount of Brown folks losing their lives in the U.S. war in Vietnam as well as the oppression of Brown communities in Los Angeles when it came to education, jobs, and immigration. This year marks the 55th anniversary of the original Moratorium and during this time, our government continues to fund a genocide in Palestine, pours billions of tax dollars into I.C.E., and continues to push out the families that have lived in their homes for generations all across Venice, Santa Monica, Culver City, Sawtelle, and other parts of LA. With the ongoing political struggles we are living through, the Westside Chicano Moratorium’s organizing committee has put together the following demands:
1. ICE out of LA! We demand an immediate end to the kidnappings and violent assault on our neighbors
2. End Policing! We demand an end to surveillance, racial profiling, and PD - ICE collaboration
3. End the Genocide! We demand an arms embargo and end to the genocide and the occupation of
Palestine
4. Defend Education! We demand full protection for public education and ethnic studies
The Westside Chicano Moratorium is being organized and endorsed by a broad coalition of organizations including Westside for Palestine, Community Solidarity Project, Palms Unhoused Mutual Aid, Venice Justice, CD11 Coalition for Human Rights, Los Ronderos de Los Redes, Ground Game LA, the LA chapter of Democratic Socialists of America, the Peace and Freedom Party Los Angeles, the LA branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, and more. Several of these local organizations will be seen tabling in the park and will have representatives that will speak throughout the morning. The park event will include speakers, music, and other organizations who will table with activities and information about their organizations.
