(Fidel Devkota, 2023, Nepal/Sri Lanka, 87 minutes)
A selection at the 2023 Venice Film Festival, Nepalese director Fidel Devkota makes his narrative feature debut with The Red Suitcase. The story of a truck driver making a two-day haul between the Kathmandu airport and a remote mountain town for a delivery, much of The Red Suitcase’s runtime takes in the beautiful Nepalese countryside, at least until our driver’s truck breaks down and the driver is taken in for the night by a veteran of the war in Kashmir. Director Devkota cites the masters Mizoguchi, Ozu, and Hou Hsiao-hsien as major influences, and American cinephiles are likely to find echoes of Tibetan filmmaker Pema Tseden in here as well.
In Nepalese with English subtitles.
