Visiting Author: Laurie Gwen Shapiro, "The Aviator and the Showman"
"The Aviator and the Showman" reveals the untold story of Amelia Earhart: A young social worker and amateur pilot who was recruited by publicity-hungry publisher George Putnam to fill the role of daredevil female pilot during the heyday of Charles Lindbergh -- though his recklessness, combined with her own appetite for fame and adventure, led to increasingly risky flights and her eventual death. The book is a NY Times Editors' Choice and has been chosen for many publications' Best Books lists. The Washington Post called it "an eye-opening look into the lives of a Jazz Age power couple and their dangerous flirtation with fame."
Laurie Gwen Shapiro's writing has appeared in the New Yorker (including the award-winning "The Improbable Journey of Dorothy Parker's Ashes"), the NY Times, New York Magazine, the LA Review of Books, and in two books of narrative nonfiction. She is also an Emmy-nominated documentary director.
