Virtual Event: "The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto" with Historian Elizabeth R. Hyman
Abbot Public Library will be joining Ashland Public Library in hosting Historian Elizabeth R. Hyman to discuss "The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto."
The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is one of the most storied events of the Holocaust, yet previous accounts of it have almost entirely focused on its male participants. In "The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto: The True Story of Five Courageous Young Women Who Sparked an Uprising," Holocaust historian Elizabeth Hyman introduces five young, courageous Polish Jewish women - known as "the girls" by the leadership of the resistance and "bandits" by their Nazi oppressors - who were central to the Jewish resistance as fighters, commanders, couriers and smugglers. Join us as Hyman shares this extraordinary, important and heretofore hidden history with us.

The granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Polish Jews who fled their homeland in 1939 and ultimately made their way as refugees to the United States, Elizabeth R. Hyman earned dual master’s degrees in History and Library Science from the University of Maryland-College Park, and has written the history blog, "HISTORICITY (was already taken)," since 2011. Hyman lives in New Paltz, New York. Her first book, a work of narrative nonfiction titled "The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto: The True Story of Five Courageous Young Women Who Sparked an Uprising," will be released by Harper Perennial in Fall 2025.
