Vanessa Chan visits the store to celebrate the launch of her debut novel. The Storm We Made is a spellbinding, sweeping novel about a Malayan mother who becomes an unlikely spy for the invading Japanese forces during WWII—and the shocking consequences that rain upon her community and family. Friend of the store Jane Wong will join Vanessa in conversation.
The Storm We Made is an amalgamation of a literary gem, a harrowing historical novel, and a thrilling page-turner—it plumbs the depths of love and the brutality of war while addressing notions of colonialism, classism, racism, and misogyny. The narrative is brilliantly told through four different points of view: Cecily and her three children, Jujube, Abel, and Jasmin, each of whom encounters a different fate.
Vanessa Chan is the Malaysian author of The Storm We Made (Marysue Rucci Books, Jan 2024), a national bestseller, Good Morning America Book Club Pick, and BBC Radio 2 Book Club pick. Acquired by international publishers in a flurry of auctions, the novel, her first, will be published in more than twenty languages worldwide. Her other work has been published in Vogue, Esquire, and more. Vanessa grew up in Malaysia and is now based mostly in Brooklyn.
Jane Wong is the author of the poetry collections How to Not Be Afraid of Everything and Overpour and the memoir Meet Me Tonight in Atlantic City. An associate professor of creative writing at Western Washington University, she grew up in New Jersey and currently lives in Seattle, Washington.
