MEMPHIS, April 1st – The University of Memphis School of Music is thrilled to announce the free admission "University of Memphis Horns Unplugged" concert, a groundbreaking musical experience that will redefine the boundaries of traditional horn performance. Unlike the traditional classical sound often heard from “French” horns, “University of Memphis Horns Unplugged” is set to feature a wide variety of contemporary pieces. Set to take place on April 1st at 7:30 pm in Harris Hall, this one-of-a-kind concert will feature the entire studio ensemble, including the exceptional talents of just-graduated master's students.
The concert will showcase a diverse repertoire, with half of the arrangements created in-house, and the other half consisting of public arrangements. The unique challenge of interpreting pop music on horn was highlighted by Professor Frederick, emphasizing the distinctive approach required: "So you're kind of getting the gist of what the rhythm is on the page, but making it sound like the actual song you've heard on the radio or Spotify." A key focus of the performance will be the unique interpretation of pop music. The ensemble brings a fresh perspective to popular tunes, classic musicals, and more; translating the essence of radio hits and Spotify favorites into a horn-driven experience.
One standout performer, James Currence, has pioneered a new sonic dimension in horn music. By utilizing innovative muting techniques and running the horn through a pedal board typically associated with guitars, James has created a distinct and captivating effect. Commenting on this groundbreaking approach, his professor Jeremiah Frederick states, "It’s really, really fascinating to hear what that does for the horn sound and then the things we do that maybe the guitar couldn’t."
The "University of Memphis Horns Unplugged" concert promises to be an evening of musical innovation and boundary-pushing exploration. The concert is not just a showcase of technical prowess but also a demonstration of the performers ability to venture beyond classical norms. As Professor Frederick aptly puts it, "Yeah, we’ve got our techniques and our beautiful sound that’s known in Tchaikovsky and Brahms, but we can get outside of the box and show you a little bit of a different side."
Don't miss this extraordinary concert that blends tradition with innovation, showcasing the immense talent and creativity of the University of Memphis horn studio. Join us on April 1st at the Scheidt School of Music in Harris Hall for an unforgettable musical journey.
