UIndy Art & Design Lecture Series: Sam Froh - Art Therapy

About Sam Froh Samantha (Sam) Froh, LMHC, ATR (she/her) is an art therapist, counselor, artist, and educator living and working on the ancestral lands of the Kiikapoi, Kaskaskia, and Myaamia peoples, colonially known as Indianapolis. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Indianapolis in 2019 with a BS in Pre Art Therapy with distinction, and received an MA in Art Therapy from the George Washington University in 2022. She is currently employed as a full-time therapist at a non-profit outpatient facility offering both individual and group therapy for mental health and substance use treatment. Sam’s experience has primarily been in providing arts based programs and services in community-based organizations with a variety of peoples, including people with cognitive and physical disabilities, children from low-income households, elderly folk in assisted living, adolescent refugee students, adults who are unhoused, and those who face systemic barriers to accessing resources. Sam works from a person-centered and trauma-informed framework that includes understanding an individual within their context and the many levels of systems they exist in. She believes in the power of every individual to find their own truth through their artistic process, as well as the importance of cultural humility and a social justice orientation for herself as a clinician. Sam’s lineage of knowledge and those who have influenced her practice includes Nadine Burke Harris, Judith Herman, Jordan Potash, Lisa Garlock, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Chelsea Leeds, Stephen Porges, Arielle Schwartz, bell hooks, Mariame Kaba, Angela Davis, Resmaa Menakem, Francine Shapiro, Tally Tripp, and many other art therapists, authors, activists, and teachers. Outside of work, Sam finds restoration and joy in spending time in nature, drinking lattes and reading a good book, engaging in her own artistic practice, and trying new hobbies with friends.
