Two Thousand Maniacs!
(Herschell Gordon Lewis, 1964, USA, 83 minutes)
In the first of our 2023 Grave Tales sidebar to switch out the film screened as compared to our 2019 program, we’re switching the Herschell Gordon Lewis slot from his 1963 breakthrough Blood Feast to the following year’s Two Thousand Maniacs! Everyone wins in this scenario, as Two Thousand Maniacs! is a better-made film, but it doesn’t forgo Blood Feast’s iconoclastic lurid gruesomeness that “The Godfather of Gore” Lewis quickly became known for. In it, we have two tourists from the North visiting the Southern city of Pleasant Valley, which had been obliterated during the Civil War. Our Northerners are invited to a centenary celebration while there, but quickly find that they aren’t so interested in being involved in the festivities after all.
Unless otherwise noted, admission is:
$8 for the general public
$7 for seniors, Webster alumni and students from other schools
$6 for Webster University staff and faculty
Free for Webster students with proper ID.
We offer general admission seating with payment of cash, check, or credit.
Note: Last-minute changes may occur.
The Winifred Moore Auditorium is the home of the Webster University Film Series. Originally used as a chapel, it now boasts the most comfortable theater seats around. (Some of the original pews can be seen in the hallways of Webster Hall.) The auditorium seats 240.
In addition to film screenings, the auditorium hosts jazz and classical concerts, Opera Studio performances, lectures, town hall meetings, and other university events.
