Tucson Flute Club "Spring Medley"
Tucson Flute Club presents the Southern Arizona Flute Orchestra in concert on Sunday, April 2, at 2 p.m. at St. Philip’s In The Hills Episcopal Church (in the Church). The concert, titled “A Spring Medley,” will include familiar and atmospheric music in a variety of styles: Selections from the Sound of Music, Memories of East Tennessee by Austin Alan Scott, Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair arranged by Ricky Lombardo, Belo Horizonte by David Morgan and Girl from Ipanema by Antônio Carlos Jobim. Featured will be Sakura Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) and an arrangement of four Japanese folk songs, as a prelude to the Flute Club’s trip to Japan this summer. The group performs under the baton of Caleb Hathaway. The public is warmly invited. Mask wearing is encouraged. Admission is free, with donations appreciated.
Concert attendees will be able to purchase raffle tickets for a handmade quilt. The raffle will take place at the group’s Members Recital on Sunday, May 7. Tickets are $10 or 3 for $25.
The instrumentation for the concert will include multiple sizes of flutes — piccolo, C flute, alto flute, bass flute, and contrabass flute — encompassing six octaves and producing a surprising, richly textured sound.
St. Philip's is located at 4440 North Campbell Avenue (at River Road, northeast corner). There is ample parking under the solar panels on the east side or in the north parking lot. There are several accessible parking spaces just south of the Church.
Tucson Flute Club was founded in 1970 by the late Philip Swanson, then professor of flute at UA. The membership includes both amateur and professional flutists, as well as those interested in the flute, including five of the original founding members. The objectives of this 501(c)3 organization are to enable flutists to meet for ensemble playing for their own enjoyment; to broaden the knowledge of flute literature by providing performing opportunities for members and guest artists; and to increase knowledge of the flute through lectures, discussions, and related activities.
