In May of 2024, Elgin Police Chief Ana Lalley created the Elgin Police Department Cold Case Unit to review cold cases in the City of Elgin. Detective Andrew Houghton and Sergeant Matt Vartanian were the first members of that unit and, at her direction, launched a podcast called Somebody Knows Something: The Elgin Police Cold Case Podcast which takes listeners along with actual cold case detectives in the City of Elgin as they investigate real cold cases from their agency. Detective Houghton and Hall will discuss the unique challenges of working cold cases and the use of podcasting as a new medium to generate community interest and tips in cold case homicides and missing person cases in a manner that keeps the victims at the center of the story and avoids sensationalizing these tragic incidents. The podcast is currently listed in the top 1% of all podcasts globally and has have over 300k downloads to date. As of August 2026, the podcast has released 3 seasons focusing on missing persons cases and homicides from the 1970s and 1980s and generated over 75 tips for area cold cases. Detective Chris Hall joined the unit in 2025 and a 3rd full-time detective, Beth Sterricker, joined in 2026. Season 3 is out now!
