Tributes & Innovations

The Northshore Concert Band (NCB) resumes its 2024/25 subscription season, its 69th, February 16, with Tributes & Innovations, a synthesis of works that pays homage to our musical forebears while embracing the creative minds shaping classical music today. Led by Artistic Director Mallory Thompson, the concert includes the world premiere of Jay Kennedy’s Let Your Light Shine. This work is commissioned by NCB and pays tribute to Mallory Thompson’s inspiring musical leadership of the Northshore Concert Band, celebrating her enduring influence and vision. The program begins with Giovanni Gabrieli’s Canzon Primi Toni à 8 followed by Kathryn Salfelder's Cathedrals, a fantasy on Gabrieli’s composition. "Cathedrals is a synthesis of the old and the new, evoking the mystery and allure of Gabrieli’s spatial music, intertwined with a rich color palette, modal harmonies, and textures of woodwinds and percussion." The concert also features Ron Nelson’s Passacaglia (Homage on B-A-C-H), a foreboding tableau of continuous variations based on Johann Sebastian Bach’s trademark musical cryptogram. Exceptional middle school musicians from the Chicagoland area join NCB musicians on stage for the 21st annual Lifetime of Music event, featuring music from How to Train Your Dragon, Dwayne Milburn’s Meditation, and the audience-favorite pasodoble Amparito Roca. The Lifetime of Music Initiative is a celebrated annual event where local student musicians are invited to join Northshore Concert Band on stage at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall for a portion of the winter program of the subscription concert season. This program provides a rewarding musical experience to young musicians: granting access to unique performance opportunities outside of the classroom, introducing students to outstanding wind band repertoire, and exposing participants to the performance opportunities that await them beyond high school, regardless of whether they choose to pursue music as a career.
