In a January 7 article, Livermore Vine reporter Jude Strzemp reported that the National Nuclear Security Administration has withdrawn plans to release a Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) for public comment on its “Enhanced Plutonium Utilization” proposal, which would increase plutonium use at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Instead, only a final SEIS will be released later this year, with no public hearings, comment period, or community engagement.
“This decision makes it clear that the Lab and the National Nuclear Security Administration prefer the Livermore community and the American public not engage in decision-making about nuclear weapons programs and their impacts,” said Tri-Valley CAREs Executive Director Scott Yundt.
The decision follows President Trump’s January 20, 2025 executive order, Unleashing American Energy, which amended National Environmental Policy Act rules.
