In April 1916, Eleanor Ford and her sister Josephine traveled to New York to select Eleanor's trousseau and wedding dress from Lucile, the couture label founded by Lucy, Lady Duff-Gordon. On Thursday, March 26, 2026, Ford House invites you to explore that remarkable story in person.
This engaging lecture traces Lucile's extraordinary career, from dressing friends in her London home to opening boutiques in New York and Chicago and helping shape the foundations of modern couture. The evening's centerpiece: newly conserved original gowns from Eleanor's 1916 shopping trip, on view and discussed in the context of the craftsmanship and cultural influence that made Lucile one of her era's most sought-after designers.
Lisa Worley, Director of Material Culture at Ford House, and Claire Zimmeth, Conservation and Collections Manager, lead the presentation. Together they bring these garments to life through the lens of fashion history, textile conservation, and the personal story of a woman whose style shaped her family's legacy.
The lecture runs from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Lake Shore Room at the Ford House Visitor Center, 1100 Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe Shores. Tickets are $15 for the public and $12 for Friends of Ford House members. This is an adult program.
