Robots, OR tours highlight Oct. 28 festival at Abrazo Scottsdale Campus Family-friendly event showcases surgical technology at the hospital’s Surgical Institute Families can see surgical robots during interactive operating room tours, learn about minimally invasive orthopedic, spine, bariatric and general surgery procedures, see first responder vehicles and more during a free, family-friendly event Oct. 28 at Abrazo Scottsdale Campus. Transforming Healthcare: Meet Abrazo’s Surgical Robots is an opportunity for hands-on demonstrations of the hospital’s surgical technology and hear from surgeons who use the robots. Physicians will be available to answer questions, attendees can sign a “Thank you” banner for first responders, and kid-friendly activities will be set up outside the hospital. Planned displays include “test drives” of the DaVinci surgical robot and an up-close view of how the Mako robot is used during orthopedic surgery. • DaVinci technology uses tiny instruments with a greater range of motion than a human hand, with 3D magnification of the surgical area that allow surgeons to operate through tiny incisions. • Mako robotics provide surgeons with a 3D computer-generated model of the patient's anatomy that optimizes socket preparation, implant positioning and alignment for hip and knee procedures. Other planned displays include the O-arm surgical imaging system that provides 2D and 3D navigation for spine and orthopedic procedures, and physical therapists to talk about improving your balance. “Join us for an interactive experience with our surgical robots, highlighting the exceptional work and technology in use at our Surgical Institute. We will open up our surgical suites to show how we use robotics and other navigation technology,” said Abrazo Scottsdale Campus CEO Ruben Castro. “As part of this event we also will be hosting a fall festival with activities, food and an opportunity to thank local EMS crews as the Oct. 28 is also National First Responders Day. A fire truck, rescue helicopter and ambulance are scheduled to be here for kids and adults to see up close.” Robot-assisted surgery allows minimally invasive techniques that use smaller incisions than traditional open surgery, and adds precision and accuracy to the surgeon’s movements.
