“Toys from the Attic” on display at the Boutwell House, Saturday, July 19, 11 - 2.

We’ll never know the fun they had. Or the squabbles. We can only cherish the toys they left behind with their childhoods: the tin train engine, the cast iron ponies and horse-drawn fire wagons, the model trolley, the well-worn doll, the dollhouse, and more--all on display at the 1851 Boutwell House this summer. Take in “Toys from the Attic” at the Groton History Center’s Open House, Saturday, July 19, from 11 to 2. All are invited free of charge (donations welcome) to tour the Italianate home at 172 Main Street, enjoy the historical ambiance and elegant details, and learn about the illustrious and influential family that brought this gracious home to life between 1851 and 1933. Another Open House follows on Saturday, August 16, from 11 am to 2 pm, and in September, an exhibition of Groton’s lakes region with photos and ephemera from the early 20th century, when the area offered city dwellers refuge from the heat and dust. Stroll the garden with its broad (universally accessible) gravel paths and benches with dazzling views of Gibbet Hill, open to the public during daylight hours seven days a week. One of several romantic spots around town, the Boutwell House and gardens are just a few steps off Main Street but close to two centuries’ distance from contemporary life. For more information about these and other 2025 events visit www.grotonhistory.org, or email, [email protected]. Office hours are Mondays and Thursdays. Please call 978-448-0092 to make an appointment or to schedule a photoshoot in the garden.
