Bravo TV's Top Chef alumni Nelson German (Season 18) and fine dining maestro Mark Liberman host a one-night-only collaboration dinner at Mägo in Piedmont, Oakland on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 (Seatings: 5pm - 8pm, $120/person). The two stalwart Oakland chefs share a love of authentic Latin American cuisines and invite diners to experience a special tasting menu intermingling their respective homelands of the Dominican Republic and Colombia. An opulent six-course dinner features both a family-style main course and elevated plated dishes. Artisanal cocktails will feature the premium Diplomatico Rum and a curated selection of wines will be available to enjoy.
Liberman says, "I am looking forward to celebrating both of our Latin American experiences, sharing foods and bold flavors that we grew up with while showcasing where we live and how those influences make our dishes and story unique."
German adds, "I've been excited to collaborate with Mark for a while now. He's cooking some of the best modern Colombian food in the Bay, and our Central and South American roots allow for a lot of creativity in the kitchen. It's going to be a special dinner at Mägo."
Mägo spotlights a changing-daily tasting menu of modern Colombian fare, anchored with the freshest Northern California ingredients with simple flavors in bold combinations. Chef Liberman has Michelin-star pedigree having staged at two-star Carre des Feuillantes (France), and as Chef de Cuisine at one-star La Folie (San Francisco). He was among the Top 10 Finalists in the Bocuse d'Or (NYC, 2010), and opened AQ in San Francisco to much critical acclaim (Bon Appetit and Esquire "Best New Restaurants of the Year," James Beard finalist "Best New Restaurant"). He further served as Executive Chef of Mercer Restaurant Group, overseeing the opening Bon Marche Brasserie, TBD (wood fire cooking) and Fenix, before opening Mägo.
Following his appearance on Top Chef (Season 18), German recently went head-to-head with Bobby Flayon Season 34 of his Food Network cooking show, Beat Bobby Flay. In summer 2023, Nelson reimagined his Michelin-recommended restaurant alaMar to become the SF Bay Area's only Dominican restaurant. San Francisco Chronicle noted of alaMar Dominican Kitchen, "German cook's dishes of deeper personal significance, drawing influence from family recipes and eating around his old stomping grounds of Washington Heights, a New York City hub for the Dominican diaspora."
