Written by Crystal Adaway and directed by Catherine Tripp, To Be Still is a poetic new drama that explores how people with different perspectives deal with grief and mourning as they journey on a rocky path to find common ground in a contentious landscape.
Our society today is challenged in its ability to be civil and kind to people holding different opinions, whether religious, political, or social. The production of To Be Still is timely: the performances will take place mere weeks before the 2024 presidential and legislative elections. To Be Still offers a conduit for conveying understanding in uncomfortable situations and encouraging meaningful conversations about difficult subjects.
Playwright Crystal Adaway says she was inspired to write this play after researching the history of American funerary practices for a screenplay she was working on. “As I was reading about the evolution of funeral homes and the choices we face when a loved one dies, I was reminded repeatedly how the language and rituals surrounding grief and death are so tightly woven with religion. The non-religious population is growing, and I wanted to dramatize different perspectives on religious beliefs in American culture in hopes of sparking conversation by audience members.”

Pipeline Playwrights is the only theater collaborative in the Washington, DC area dedicated to producing new plays by women playwrights. A nonprofit corporation founded by women playwrights, Pipeline seeks to close the theatre gender gap one play, one reading, one production at a time. In addition to Crystal Adaway, the members of Pipeline Playwrights include Nicole Burton, Patricia Connelly, Jean Koppen, and Ann Timmons.
