An evocative showcase of art that spotlights the critical issue of marine debris and its profound impact on Hawai‘i’s coastlines and ecosystems will be on display at a free, monthlong exhibition at The ARTS at Marks Garage in Honolulu’s historic Chinatown district beginning Friday, November 1.
The third annual sci-art exhibition, organized by the University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant College Program, will kick off on November 1 at 5:00pm for opening night during First Friday with an opportunity to meet the artists, enjoy light pupus and refreshments, and listen to live music by Sarah Woo. After opening night, the exhibit will be open to the public every Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5:00pm through Saturday, November 23.
In partnership with the Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project and Hawai‘i Pacific University’s Center for Marine Debris Research, “Refuse REFUSE” features a dynamic collection of art by 15 local artists, 7 selected students from Kaʻu High and Pahala Elementary School who participated in the Youth Art Competition, and 2 classrooms from Kīpapa Elementary and Voyager Public Charter School. The exhibit emphasizes how marine debris and plastic pollution affect Hawai‘i’s unique marine and coastal environments and explores innovative and meaningful responses through art.
