On Thursday, September 3, 2026, Aretha’s Jazz Café presents The Unofficial Jazz Festival Kickoff, featuring award-winning Detroit jazz vocalist Sky Covington for a special evening celebrating the music, culture, and spirit of jazz.
As Detroit prepares to welcome jazz lovers from near and far for Jazz Festival weekend, this intimate Thursday-night concert offers the perfect way to begin the festivities one night early — inside one of downtown Detroit’s treasured jazz rooms.
After spending much of the year producing, curating, and creating opportunities for other artists through The Preservation of Jazz, Covington returns to center stage for an evening devoted to what started it all: singing jazz.
Known for her soulful interpretations, storytelling, and dedication to preserving the legacy of jazz, Sky Covington invites longtime supporters, fellow musicians, visiting jazz enthusiasts, and friends to gather for an evening of great music, fellowship, and Detroit culture.
