The Translator’s Tightrope: Balancing Replication and Creation with Dr. Elizabeth Blood

Literary translators have split loyalties. They must be faithful to the author of the original text and do their best to replicate its content, tone, and style as faithfully as possible. At the same time, they have a duty to the reader: to create a text that is well-written and engaging to read in the language of translation. Come learn about how translators walk this tightrope with an insider’s view of the process of translation, some common obstacles translators encounter (linguistic and cultural differences), how the business works, and the impact that machine translation has had on the industry in recent years. Examples will be shared from Dr. Blood’s English translations of French historical true crime novels. Registration is required and limited to 50 attendants. Please register at tinyurl.com/Translators-Tightrope. Dr. Elizabeth Blood is a professor of French at Salem State University and a freelance French to English translator. She has published histories of French-Canadian communities in Massachusetts (Salem and Southbridge, with Worcester in the works), a collection of Québécois folktales (with contributions from student translators), and a history of colonial New France. She is also the translator of historical true crime novels written by French author Viviane Janouin-Benanti. This program is sponsored by the Friends of Abbot Public Library.
