The Suburbanite Deconstructed, a photo essay by Sharon Vatsky

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Teaneck Public Library presents The Suburbanite Deconstructed – an exhibition of photographs by Sharon Vatsky Exhibition Dates: August 1 – 31, 2026 Opening Reception: Saturday, August 8th 2-4 pm Info: Phone/text 917 207 9185/ [email protected] Teaneck, New Jersey – The Teaneck Public Library is pleased to present The Suburbanite Deconstructed, a series of photographs by Sharon Vatsky. The exhibition is on view from August 1 – August 31, 2026, with a reception on Saturday, August 8th from 2:00 – 4:00 PM in the library’s Parker Room, located at 840 Teaneck Road, Teaneck, NJ 07666. Sharon is a longtime resident of Teaneck who takes nearly daily walks through town. This series of photographs is inspired by her encounters with the Suburbanite , a free advertising publication that is dropped on lawns and driveways across the town every Thursday. Most homeowners find a way to utilize or dispose of them, but others leave them outside to gradually decompose. “Noticing Suburbanites is a feature of my daily walks, and I have documented them in their various states along the route. Because the Suburbanite is a shared aspect of town life, the Teaneck Public Library, a shared community gathering space, is the ideal venue to show them.” The exhibition is free and open to the public during library hours: Monday -Thursday 9:00 am - 9:00 pm, Friday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, Saturday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm and Sunday from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm. About the Artist: Sharon Vatsky is a longtime Teaneck resident and lifelong art educator. Her career in museum education includes a decade as Curator of Education at the Queens Museum and more than twenty years at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, most recently as Director of Visitor Engagement. She is the author of two books, Museum Gallery Activities: A Handbook (2018) and Interactive Museum Tours: A Guide to In-Person and Virtual Experiences (2023) both published by Rowman and Littlefield. She holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in art education and an MFA degree in painting from SUNY Albany. Her work has been included in numerous group and solo exhibitions.
