The Northwinds Symphonic Band returns to Sands Point Preserve

Conductors Helen P. Bauer and Brandon Bromsey have planned a special program. Broadway actress Karen Murphy will host the concert, which is designed to delight children and adults alike. For example, Band Land, a narrated work written by Derek Bourgeois for children, tells the story of a neighborhood of instruments who cannot resolve their differences until two instruments from different families fall in love and bring harmony to their musical community. The arrangement of this piece highlights every section of the band and demonstrates the unique abilities and characteristics of each instrument. Karen Murphy will narrate the piece. The performance also includes Edwin Franko Goldman’s The Chimes of Liberty, Walter Finlayson’s Bright Eyes, starring a trio of trumpets from the band’s brass section, and Young Person’s Guide to John Williams, which features some unforgettable musical numbers from John Williams’ prolific movie scores. Special guest artists, North Shore High School’s Dance Troupe, will take center stage to perform Bill Whalen’s Thunder and Lightning, the percussion feature from Broadway’s Riverdance. Members from each section of the band will introduce and demonstrate their instruments, and the children in attendance will be given the opportunity to take the podium as guest conductors. Tickets for the performance are $10 per adult, and $5 for children ages two years and up. Tickets will be available the day of the performance, and a $15 parking rate for non-members will apply.
