The Kids Aren’t Alright: Troubled Teens on Screen

After a popular run this fall, our The Kids Aren’t Alright: Troubled Teens on Screen Film Talk series is back. Join local filmmaker Jeremy Cropf as he explores one of the most enduring genres of the past few decades—the teen movie. “When teens began hanging out at the mall in the early 1980s, the movies followed,” observed critic Timothy Shary in “Generation Multiplex” and the intervening decades have only reinforced this. This four-part Film Talk and screening series delves into the rich tapestry of teenage representation in film, exploring the evolution of the "teen movie" subgenre from its inception to its contemporary manifestations. Drawing inspiration from a high school education structure, each week corresponds to a different school grade, focusing on key films that have shaped and defined the portrayal of troubled teens on screen. From classic rebellious figures (James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause) to modern complexities (Easy A, “Euphoria”, and most recently Emma Seligman’s acclaimed Bottoms), we’ll navigates the diverse landscapes of teenage narratives, providing a comprehensive understanding of the cultural, social, and psychological dimensions embedded in these films.
