When Victor Hugo penned his masterpiece in 1831, he wasn't writing a fairy tale. He was holding up a mirror to the darkest corners of human nature. At the center of this story is the ancient Greek concept of Anánke—fate. However as this powerful adaptation demonstrates, the tragic fate of these characters isn’t dictated by the gods; it is forged by human cruelty, obsession, and prejudice.
At its core, Hunchback forces us to confront a haunting question: "What makes a monster and what makes a man?" Is it the physical isolation of Quasimodo, whose soul is pure but whose appearance terrifies a judgmental world? Is it the righteous, suffocating malice of Archdeacon Frollo, who hides his own destructive obsessions behind a facade of piety? Or is it found in society's treatment of Esmeralda and the Romani people—outsiders who are hunted and marginalized simply for existing?
While the stage remains silent, the dancers' bodies ache for a sanctuary they can never truly find. In this gothic world, ultimate safety remains a fragile, heartbreaking illusion.
Our cast has leaned heavily into the shadows of this piece, exploring the raw, unfiltered emotions of love, lust, power, and betrayal. We invite you to look beyond the spectacle and sit with the discomfort of these characters' choices. We hope this tragic, beautiful story challenges you to examine the walls we build in our own world, and who we choose to cast outside of them.
