Once banned in France as an incitement to teenage suicide, THE DEVIL PROBABLY offers a haunting portrait of a truly lost generation. Yet this somber film is also Robert Bresson’s most comical. Within a group of young environmentalists looking to address the crisis of world hunger, one strangely charismatic member leaves, rejecting political activism as insufficient to cope with the sickness of contemporary society and resolving to kill himself as the ultimate gesture of refusal.
In THE DEVIL PROBABLY both the world and Bresson’s cinema are in disarray, and the waves of inner conflict are deeply troubling and tremendously moving. Bresson’s penultimate masterpiece is also his dizziest curveball.
"Shooting this film in 1977 was a crazy act of clairvoyance. The film is punk, ecological, romantic, radical, desperate, and yet endowed with the energy and vitality of rebellion." - Bertrand Bonello
