Did you know that a majority of homes in Lower Merion and Narberth were erected before 1945? These houses were constructed using materials not commonly found in newer construction, including plaster, stone and brick assembled and pointed with lime-based mortars, and windows made from old growth wood. Unlike many of the unsustainable materials used in modern construction, the materials used to construct older houses can be maintained and restored rather than replaced.
This winter and spring, the Lower Merion Conservancy, Narberth Borough Historical Architectural Review Board (HARB), and Lower Merion Township HARB and Historical Commission (HC) are offering three workshops to introduce residents to basic strategies for the maintenance and care of older homes. If you live in a historically designated home, own a home that is older, or are simply curious about the building materials common to homes, these workshops are for you!
