The 2023 West Virginia Mountaineer Short Film Festival

The West Virginia Mountaineer Short Film Festival is an international, competitive film screening hosted by West Virginia University's Time-Based Arts program in the School of Art and Design. Over a 3-day period and across multiple WVU venues, the festival showcases selected films and animations from around the world, along with short films created by WVU students and regional filmmakers. The festival focuses on exceptional, compelling, and boundary-pushing works in all styles and genres of film and animation, including drama, documentary, comedy, sci-fi, 3D and experimental media and live performance. Its primary mission is to help foster creative approaches to these genres and to highlight independent filmmaking and video art to Morgantown and the surrounding community. This year the festival will screen over 100 works from West Virginia and regional filmmakers and from dozens of countries in a wide range of genres and formats. Prizes will be awarded in each of the festival's competitive categories. Admission is open to the public and is 100% FREE to all screenings.

Film screenings and events take place Friday April 14 at the WVU Mountainlair Green; Saturday, April 15, all day long at the Canady Creative Arts Center and Sunday, April 16 at the WVU Mountainlair Gluck Theater.

Friday April 14 showcases student filmmaking and animation. Saturday screenings explore multiple genres and themes, including relationships and connections in a post-pandemic world, identity and gender, storytelling in multiple styles, and issues relating to art and technology. Sunday screenings have a focus on global narratives, documentary and issues relating to the environment and climate.

In addition to the film screenings and related performances and events the festival is also an opportunity for students and audience members to meet and interact with participating filmmakers and artists in attendance.
