The 14th Amendment and the Crises in American Democracy with Sherrilyn Ifill

The Frederick Douglass Center for Leadership Through the Humanities at the University of Maryland presents renowned civil rights lawyer Sherrilyn Ifill, who is the Vernon Jordan Distinguished Professor in Civil Rights at Howard University’s School of Law. Connected to the university’s focus on the Constitution as our First Year Book, Ifill will present “The 14th Amendment and the Crises in American Democracy,” a free public lecture at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center’s Gildenhorn Recital Hall on Monday, November 3 at 5:30 p.m. Ifill has spent her career centering the human condition in law and policy by fighting for civil rights, civil liberties and human rights, including through her former role as president and director-counsel of the Legal Defense Fund and current role as the founding director of the 14th Amendment Center for Law & Democracy at Howard University. Given the current and ongoing attacks on due process and birthright citizenship, this lecture is a timely opportunity to hear Ifill’s analysis on the 14th Amendment's promise of equality as a central and defining constitutional battle for the modern era. The Douglass Center promotes and encourages leadership among the campus community and the larger communities where we live and work with core values rooted in the humanities to advance a more just society.
