Learn about the history of fabric dyes and how they tie to the American Revolution. Come out to the Farm to learn about the plants and animals that were part of making the red, white, and blue colors familiar throughout the revolution, from the use of cochineal beetles to make the British red coats to the indigo that was used in the first American flag and later the Continental Army uniforms. Learn about the realities of the harsh conditions involved in the production of indigo dyes. Tour the Lake Kitchen Garden and explore some locally grown dye plants, as well as dyestuffs that were imported to make more colors. Falling Off Trees Dye House will also be on-site to offer dyeing classes with indigo dyes.
