T&C Surf Grom Contest

T&C Surf proudly announces the return of the 27th Annual T&C Surf Grom Contest, presented by Duke's Waikiki, set against the iconic backdrop of Queen’s surf break in Waikiki. Taking place over a sun-soaked weekend June 14-15, 2025, this family-friendly event celebrates Hawaii’s youth through a fun, non-competitive surf contest for aspiring surfers 12 years and under. Since its inception in 1997, the Grom Contest has introduced thousands of local keiki to the joy of surfing in a supportive, pressure-free environment. The event welcomes unrated groms only—those not participating in organized surf leagues like NSSA or HASA—giving new surfers their first taste of competition in a mellow setting. Each participant surfs in just one division, ensuring more kids can hit the waves. A highlight of the event is the Kokua Division, where parents can assist their young surfers in the water—perfect for the littlest groms gaining their confidence. Every contestant walks away with a goodie bag, official contest T-shirt, and lunch from Duke’s Waikiki. In partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, T&C Surf continues its mission of sharing the Stoke & Aloha of surfing. “We are honored to support this amazing event as T&C celebrates the youth of Hawai’i with surf and play in Waikiki,” says BGCH President & CEO, Paddy Kauhane. Founder Craig Sugihara adds, “The Grom Contest is the premiere platform for young, non-rated surfers to gain valuable experience while having fun with family and friends in the water.” Groms ages 12 and younger take to the waves vying for top spots in shortboard, longboard and bodyboard divisions. Preliminary heats are run with the top six advancing to the next round. The kokua division allows parental assistance in the line up, where a child may be pushed into a wave. Due to the high volume of kokua competitors a special awards ceremony will follow the kokua heats on Saturday afternoon with all kokua competitors receiving a medal and the opportunity to win prizes. The event wraps up on Sunday, with final heats, awarding the top six in each division receive medals and prize packs filled with surf products from event sponsors like Dakine, Vans, RVCA, Futures Fins, Yeti, PSD, Sun Bum, Science, Melin and GoPro. Plus, two lucky participants will win a custom T&C surfboards. Mahalo to all of our sponsors who help to make this day special for the kids. The smiles and pure stoke the kids will experience each year is priceless.
