Tall Ships Schooner Day Sails

The Ontario Beach Park Program Committee is thrilled to announce the coming visit of two schooners to the Port of Rochester. Both boats will off er public sailing opportunities on the Genesee River and Lake Ontario. The historic schooner When and If will join the Liberty Clipper at the Port of Rochester from August 28 through September 1. The When and If visited Rochester in June, and the community’s enthusiasm for the visit and sailing opportunities was so positive, the schooner has decided to return. And because the demand for sailing was so strong in Rochester, the Liberty Clipper will visit as well, to off er more opportunities for the community to set sail upon our Great Lake Ontario. Based in Key West, Florida and Salem, Massachusetts, the 83-foot When and If was built in 1939 for legendary General George Patton. Patton’s dream was to sail around the world with his wife Bea “when the war is over, and if I live through it.” When and If is returning to the place of its rebirth– it was restored on Cayuga Lake in 2012. Based in Boston Harbor, the 125-foot Liberty Clipper is a 1983 replica of a Baltimore schooner, a ship widely used during the 18th & 19th centuries. Among the fastest of their day, many were deployed during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. The presence of these two vessels at thePort of Rochester will surely evoke our own rich maritime history and traditions.
