Multidisciplinary artist and choreographer Takahiro Yamamoto visits the store to celebrate his newest book, NOTHINGBEING. Seattle-based performance maker and musician Fox Whitney will join to share his music in response to the concept of NOTHINGBEING. Local musicians Fox Whitney and Otto Barry will perform music in conversation with Takahiro's work.
The book is produced in conjunction with Yamamoto's latest performance of the same title, which will have its Seattle premiere at On The Boards in May 2023. NOTHINGBEING investigates ways to embody the presence of nothingness and "being," breathing spaces that we could easily dismiss and considering possibilities for the unfiltered self.
Takahiro Yamamoto's current investigations revolve around the phenomenological effects of time, embodied approach to the presence of nothingness, and the social/emotional implications of visibility. NOTHINGBEING marks his third book following Direct Path to Detour (2017) and Opacity of Performance (2021), all of which are published in conjunction with the performance project of the said titles. He has received support from New England Foundation for the Arts, Bogliasco Foundation, Oregon Community Foundation, MacDowell, National Performance Network, Japan Foundation, Regional Arts & Culture Council, Africa Contemporary Arts Consortium and others. His performance and visual art works have been presented at Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Diverseworks, Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, The Henry Art Gallery, GoDown Arts Centre, Nairobi among other venues. Yamamoto holds an MFA in Visual Studies from Pacific Northwest College of Art. He co-directs the performance company madhause with Ben Evans, and is part of the Portland-based support group Physical Education with Allie Hankins, keyon gaskin, and Lu Yim.
Fox Whitney and Otto Barry continue their queer + trans centric indie rock, pop punk, performance art/psychedelic adventures with the band Light Aloud. This project grew from their collaboration inside of Fox's performance art group Gender Tender that works at the intersection of dance, sound and conceptual art and is inspired by cults, sitcoms, riots and queer + transgender history. Special guest artists are in the Light Aloud mix, come on out and solve the mystery. Next up: Tractor Tavern April 26 with Off Off On and Nic Masangkay. www.gendertender.weebly.com
