Sync'd brings you a night of expanded cinema; bringing Pittsburgh visual artists together with local musicians to create multi projector, multi-media, sound and moving image performances.
Performances:
Michael Maraden + Good Dude Lojack
Michael Maraden will be performing what he calls "Studies in Refraction." He will be projecting his pre-recorded refraction videos through different glassware using multiple digital projectors, as well as premiering a new refraction video and other live manipulations of projected light! Good Dude Lojack will be providing electronic delight, providing a lush and delicate balance of soundscapes and rhythm.
Sarah Katherine Moore + Ian Cartwright
There are 16,000 golf courses in the United States — more active courses than the total number of McDonald’s stores nationwide. But golf is a sport in decline with hundreds of courses closing every year. Across the country, dozens of recently-closed golf courses have been protected and restored as public greenspaces in an active process called re-wilding. "After Golf" celebrates several re-wilded golf courses in the Eastern United States, including two in the Pittsburgh area. After Golf brings these greenspaces indoors, depicting video footage of the sites projected onto three screens with synced audio. The program will be built dynamically in the room from images of green, elements of original score, found footage, and cover versions of British Yacht Rock classics. Film by Sarah Moore. Music by Ian Cartwright.
Christopher Smalley + Stephen Boyle
Christopher Smalley is an independent filmmaker who was born in West Virginia and has been working in Pittsburgh since 2002. His short films range in genres from narrative, to experimental, to personal documentary. He will be projecting original works on Super 8 film as well as digital video, and sometimes combining the two.
Born and raised in central New York State, Stephen Boyle currently resides in Pittsburgh. Former member of local bands Swob, The Viragos, The Dirty Faces, The Neurasthenics, Dead At Twenty-Four, Fuck Telecorps, and The Pittsburgh free music group. On air at WRCT from 1995 to 2024, presenting odd/idiosyncratic audio from all over the place as host of "Radio Free Radio". Recent collaborations include recordings with Brian Ruryk, sporadic and striking performances with Margaret Cox, and a ten-year collusion with educator and filmmaker Adam Abrams. What people will hear at the show: Denatured audio, amplified refuse, prepared/treated speakers. Detritus would like to speak.
There will also be an interactive installation by SOS Lightshow in operation the entire night! "Turn On, Drop In, Freak Out," an interactive TV install inviting attendees to sort through some of Billy's VHS collection, glitch it out, and maybe even test out some of the old liquid techniques in a multi screen experience.
The night is made possible in part by the Director’s Fund at the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiery.
