Sponsored by Sustainable Ridgefield Park, Swap & Shop will take place Saturday Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Civic Center located at 159 Park Street in Ridgefield Park.
This year Swap & Shop offers participants the opportunity to drop-off swap items on Friday, September 18th between 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, the day of the Swap & Shop, participants can drop-off items from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00. Items can include men’s, women’s, teen’s and children’s clothing. Items should be clean and gently used. Other items include accessories (wallets, hand bags, scarves, shoes, sneakers, etc.) household items (Bedding sheets, comforters, blankets, curtains) household goods (pots, pans, bowls, plates, etc.) and small appliances (mixers, rice cookers, blenders, and handheld devices).
Following the Saturday drop-off, those who brought items to swap will have access to the Swap & Shop from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and will be allowed to browse and select items that they want to take home with them.
“Swap & Shop is our way of being proactive in taking steps to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,” said Veronica Leone, Chair of Sustainable Ridgefield Park.“
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the main source of textiles in municipal solid waste (MSW) is discarded clothing, although other smaller sources include furniture, carpets, tires, footwear, and other nondurable goods such as sheets and towels.
“The recycling rate for all textiles was 14.7 percent in 2018, with 2.5 million tons recycled, added Leone. “Within this figure, EPA estimated that the recycling rate for textiles in clothing and footwear was 13 percent based on information from the American Textile Recycling Service. Sadly, a staggering 11 million tons get sent to landfills. When we Reduce, Reuse and Recycle we are keeping goods and materials out of landfills. It’s all part of educating the community and creating awareness among our residents that clothing, household goods, appliances and other items may find a second home.”
Any clothing and accessories that remain after the conclusion of the Swap & Shop will be donated to local organizations and shelters. Remaining reuse items will go to the Reuse section at the Ridgefield Park DPW Recycling Center.
