Meet chef Paola Velez (James Beard Award finalist/Food & Wine Magazine Best New Chef/Esquire Magazine Pastry Chef of the Year) and share desserts that the attendees will prepare from her debut cookbook, "Bodega Bakes."
Paola Velez is a Dominican Republic-born pastry chef who combines the flavors of her childhood and heritage with her award-winning dessert recipes. She is the founder of the Doeki Doeki pop-up dinner series that builds community and positivity in locations around the US. She is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu and has been seen on HBO Max, Food Network, and Daily Show as well as her own social media videos. Her charity, Bakers Against Racism, has raised millions of dollars for social justice causes.
The "Cooking the Books" Supper Club gathers to share dishes that we each prepare from that month's chosen cookbook while we meet other food lovers and chat about the book and its recipes. Extra meals are donated to the food pantry.
For this "dessert club," attendees will each prepare Dominican-bodega-inspired desserts from the cookbook (for instance, Plantain Sticky Buns or Brooklyn Black & White Cookie Semifrio). We will also hear Paola talk about her journey, her inspirations, and her cookbook. Milk and coffee will be included.
Tickets $35 includes copy of cookbook.
