Sunshine Jazz Organization enters our 38th Season soon! SJO's monthly concert series "1st Fridays Live at The Lyric", is presented at the Black Archives and Historic Lyric Theater in Overtown Miami. The Lyric is a beautifully renovated 112 year old Theater, among the oldest in the USA. SJO will present "Live at The Lyric on September 6th featuring ORIENTE! Latin Soul Jazz! Eddy Balzola and his band ORIENTE! present an exciting mix of Afro-Latin Jazz, Blues, Rhythm-n-Soul. The guitarist, composer and arranger was born in Guanabacoa, Cuba, a town known for its Afro-Cuban folklore and culture. Eddy began touring the USA and Europe with a wide variety of bands, and soon he developed his signature sound. ORIENTE! began their first tour in the mid-90’s at famed New Orleans Jazz club “Snug Harbor” where the band’s sizzling, rhythmic yet melodic Afro-Cuban sounds created a buzz among the savvy audiences and some of the best musicians in town, inviting the band back several times. Since that debut, ORIENTE! has played many festivals and concerts incl – "Music Voyager" (airing on Prime Video/ YouTube), DOD U.S, Tour (Iceland, England, Germany), JVC Miami, St, Lucia Jazz Fest, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage, MOJA Pan African Fest and Piccolo Spoleto (Charleston SC), Superbowl 2020 Miami, HON-DAH Cultural Tour, Apache Nation, AZ, Sankofa (Miami), South Beach Food & Wine Fest, performing “Live on the Food Network” with Chef Bobby Flay, and many more.
ORIENTE! continues to record and perform creative, original music with fresh arrangements and exciting stage presence. The group remains ever evolving and creative with instrumentation, space and sound. The lineup for Sept 6th “1st Friday Live at the Lyric” will feature long-time band members including multi- percussionist Yoel Del Sol (Cuba), trumpeter Stuart King (Memphis, TN), trombonist William Paredes (Cuba), upright and electric bassist Rusty Hari Heck (Chicago/P.R.), and featuring a very special guest, drummer John Yarling.
* Detroit born drummer John Yarling has been described as “always being in service to the song”. He can be heard pushing boundaries, while playing open, modern, improvised music/jazz. John is a respected educator, teaching at Frost School of Music – Univ. of Miami, for over 20 years, including playing and recording with jazz great Ira Sullivan. He’s backed up jazz artists like Nat Adderly, Mose Allison, Larry Coryell, Lou Donaldson, Mike Stern, Kevin Mahogany, Trombone legend Curtis Fuller and many more.
*Among Oriente’s five veteran and exceptional band musicians, they have opened for, or performed with – Pharoah Sanders, Paquito D’Rivera, The Isley Bros., Federico Britos, The Neville Bros., Celia Cruz, Mongo Santamaria, Arturo Sandoval, Yanni, Nestor Torres, The Chi-Lites, Ray Barreto, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Jimmy Riley, Debbie Spring, Jesse Jones, Jr., Melton Mustafa Jr.
ORIENTE’s musical palette will range from melodic, bluesy, swingin’ and sensitive, to "get-down" funky. On September 6th you can expect colorful, organic rhythms and serious soul, all with the freedom of improvisation at any moment. Sit down (or Up) and enjoy!
Tickets can be purchased on the website www.sunshinejazz.org, or at the Theater Door. General Admission $30 / VIP $40 (includes Wine and Balcony seating, 7pm-8pm).
