Sunday Drivers
Sunday Drivers is a dynamic Soul & Funk band blending diverse musical influences with thoughtfulness and intensity. Their eclectic influences and refined performances effortlessly connect with every audience, leaving a lasting impression. We are a fresh sound coming to the Bay Area music scene, formed in the Fall of 2024. We draw our funk sound from groups such as Vulfpeck, Parliament, the Meters, and Sly and the Family Stone. We also incorporate R&B influence drawn from artists such as the Roots, and D'Angelo. These influences are blended with Soul and Puerto Rican music brought in by our front man and Queens native, PJ Mercado. The drummer Stefan Gilbert-O’Neil combines years of experience as a funk drummer with West African and Cuban rhythmic traditions.
Percussionist Adam King incorporates a groove-heavy style, pulling inspiration from Clay Aeschliman, Dan Mayo, and Louis Cole, blending funky, off-kilter rhythms with solid pocket playing. Keys player Marshall Oliver, being a Stevie Wonder mega fan, brings a soulful harmony that often draws from jazz legends Art Tatum and Bill Evans as well as contemporary acts such as Cory Henry and Jacob Collier. The guitarist Isaiah Chand was raised on Motown and James Brown. His funky and bluesy chops will get folks dancing in no time.
