William Cullen Bryant was the editor of the New York Evening Post, a civic activist who advocated for the rights of slaves, women, children, and laborers, and against deforestation. Considered America’s first great poet, he was a contemporary of and inspiration to Walt Whitman. Bryant helped promote the establishment of the NY Public Library, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central Park, and even the election of Abraham Lincoln. At this time, one of the most challenging periods in American history, his estate, Cedarmere, is a beautiful and appropriate setting for the celebration of the arrival of summer and for the rights of all people and all of nature. Some chairs will be available. Bring and a picnic supper (please carry out all trash; no garbage facilities will be available) and bring the whole family for what will be our third and best annual seasonal celebration! This event, produced by Friends of Cedarmere and Synergy Dance Collective NY, is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Huntington Arts Council with additional support from the Chris Crosby Foundation.
