Participants for this workshop will use a brush to drop ink onto the surface of water. As patterns emerge and develop by the slightest movements, a piece of paper is dropped on the surface, capturing the design. At the end of class, participants can make a simple hand-bound blank book to take home! Participants should bring a water bottle and clothes that are ok to get dirty.
Suminagashi is a type of paper marbling that originated in medieval Japan. Zen practitioners used the surface tension of water and ink to engage in mindfulness. The marbled paper is great for cards, book bindings, scrapbooks, bookmarks and gifts.
