Stones River National Battlefield anniversary events

The Emancipation Proclamation's 161st Anniversary. From 11 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Location: Meet at Visitor Center. The timing of the Battle of Stones River was driven by President Abraham Lincoln's desire for a victory on the battlefield on or about Jan. 1, 1863, to support the Emancipation Proclamation. This battle proved to be the victory Lincoln wanted. Spend the day exploring the impact of the Emancipation Proclamation on the war, its outcome, and the effects on our society today. PROGRAM SCHEDULE 11 a.m. - Forever Free - Participate in a 30-minute discussion of the words, meaning and impact of the Emancipation Proclamation. 1 p.m. - Rising From the Ashes - Walk through the heart of the battlefield where formerly enslaved people created a community named Cemetery following the Civil War. 2:30 p.m. - Fighting for Freedom - A talk in Stones River National Cemetery teaches about the role of Black soldiers in middle Tennessee.
